We are committed to fostering strong connections with Indigenous communities on Treaty 6 lands and the Homelands of the Métis. Beyond the realm of medical innovation, our dedication extends to empowering and collaborating with Indigenous peoples, raising awareness, and running workshops to build meaningful relationships. As part of our outreach efforts, we invite Indigenous communities to engage with us in collaborative initiatives. Dr. Abdelrasoul is aiming to build strong relations with the Indigenous peoples of this land as she moves forward with new and strengthened research endeavours.
Our Goal
Dr. Abdelrasoul’s research program focuses on solving problems with the hemodialysis systems needed to treat kidney failure patients. Specifically, she aims to create hemodialysis membranes that are more compatible with the human body than current membranes, and therefore reduce patient suffering and increase life expectancy. Her research program is the only one in Canada that is focusing on hemodialysis membranes. Dr. Abdelrasoul’s goal is to create hemodialysis membranes that are more compatible with the human body than current membranes. Her short-term aim is to reduce patient side effects and increase their quality of life. Therefore, her team is currently engaging and collaborating with patients, empowering them to contribute to her research program and affect the quality of life of hemodialysis patients in Canada and around the world. Her long-term goal is to design an artificial wearable kidney based on a membrane with greatly improved performance compared to those in use in hospitals today.
Patient Oriented Research
We are taking a patient-centered approach in our research to emphasize the lived experiences of patients with ESKD. We aim to increase the amount of research being conducted with and by patients and families, healthcare providers, and health system decision-makers. We aim to involve, collaborate with, and empower dialysis patients. We hope to gain a better understanding of the physical and psychological symptoms that patients may experience as a result of hemodialysis treatment in order to better support patients and improve patient outcomes.
